Hi all,

I have had my 2012 kuga for 16 months and have had nothing but problems with it. The latest being the Transmission limited Fuction light and Engine warning light came on and car eventually completly stopped whilst in gloucester, I had to be brought back home by RAC. I have called a few garages to see if it can be booked in for a check but struggling to find one in chippenham (and further afield) that will even look at job as "powershft gearbook is complicated".I am waiting for local Ford garage to get back to me to see if they will look at it (hoping warranty will cover work/diagnostics check). I turned car on to park car once i was dropped back and it seemed fine and orange Engine light was gone so not sure if driveable .

any one come across this before?

thanks in advance

Have had same on 2014 Titanium Powershift Diesel Auto - after much concerns and checking turns out it is a common problem on both older and newer versions of DSG gearbox
They have 2 electro solenoids that operate dual clutch and they can get dirty or fail completely - get RAC out to do ODBC error code check
AA did mine and came out with P076600 - Solenoid Shift Value D - Component remains closed
Best case ÂŁ790+ to flush the gearbox oil and replace with new filter
Worst case ÂŁ3000+ to remove gearbox and refit new solenoid
All this on a car I will have to sell soon because of ULEZ expansion in London

Yes - Keith
Ford were using cheaper ABS plastic shims for the clutch and they tend to fail after 75,000 miles
Exact same clutch array is on Volvo XC60 and have 150,000 life expectancy
Maybe a forum query to Ford Quality control - as issue appears to be fixed under warranty outside of UK as a recall

XC60 never had the MPS6 iirc and in Volvo circles the MPS6 (which is the 6DCT450 Powershift) is as infamous as it is in th Ford camp.

Ford bought Volvo in 1999 so funnily enough when Ford released their Powershift in 2008 some Volvos had it fitted.

None of the D5s had Powershift because it was too fragile.

Ours scraped though to 65,000 before total loss of drive.

The Volvo MPS6 is an identical unit made in same factory bar firmware iirc so they did well to hit 150,000 miles.

I ended up doing a 2017 Powershift conversion to ours, wouldn't fancy doing another one but at least it's now got rid of the joke of a clutch damper and now has a proper external DMF.

Hi Oldgraymare
Seems like this is an issue with clutches rather than gearbox in Powershift models
I noticed on US forums and Australia that Ford have been replacing these under a recall so there's definitely a problem
Had to have a specialist gearbox shop replace both clutches on mine at nearly ÂŁ3k including new flywheel
Have since sold car so will be leaving forum soon
Best of luck getting this sorted

USA never got the 6DCT450 that is in our Kugas, their lawsuit was against the 6DCT250 iirc which is even more of a mess (dry clutches in an automatic, you could make it up..).

There are at least 2 transmissions called "Powershift", the 6DCT450 wet clutch and the 6DCT250 dry clutch. The number denotes maximum torque in NM.

Ford don't care about the early geabox failures, they should have fixed them FOC imho because the design was that bad.

I believe the later "good" transmission is referred to as the 6DCT451, but I've rarely seen that mentioned.

Hi Keithmac
FYI the clutch repair I had done was on the later 451 gearbox - so I don't think they are any better
Clutch had self-destructed due to cheap plastic shims as per pictures shown earlier in this feed
What comes to mind is Planned Oscellesance - crap materials used in production designed to fail

That was my picture and that was definitely a 6DCT450.

The joy!. this was my build thread.

There is no room in the later 451 gearbox for the plastic mess, have you got any pictures of your 451 clutch pack?.
Hi Keithmac

Unfortunately no pictures- I have since sold the car - albeit with a trading standards issue over ULEZ compliance

From memory the plastic shims were definitely broken in there - 2 springs had wedged against flywheel and caused a 3mm deep gouge meaning a new one

From my motorsport days I sourced a lighter competition flywheel and clutches before I sold car

Sorry can't be more helpful
