Hi all, back again!

I tried to upgrade my sync 3 this evening. I attempted it via USB as the 'search for update' option never returned an update.

After downloading the file from the ford website and plugging in my USB drive to the car, all started well and it informed me that it was updating. After about 35 mins, the updating message disappeared and I'm left not knowing what to do. I left it another 15 mins and gave up. Does anybody know how long this should take?

There's only so long I can sit on my driveway with the engine running!

For info, my current software version is 3.0 build 19205

The Ford Sync3 update page will tell you what FMC database has recorded as your current version. Check your car settings to see if it matches with the FMC database. If it’s a different version then your car has probably updated and you need to check your USB stick for the log file that should have been produced during update.

Personally It’s never taken more than 30mins for sync3 to successfully update, maps can take over an hour or more.

I've checked both Ford's records and my version and it seems to match on 3.0.19205. (is that a version from 2019?)

I checked the USB drive and there wasn't any log file created. Guessing my impatience didn't allow it enough time to finish. It didn't look like there was any hard disk activity after the initial 10mins, so I'm assuming it copies the file across and then installs locally?

Might just need to try it again when on a long run. Would this start the whole process again, or will it pick up from where it got to?

Don't know why I'm bothered to be honest, just feels like I should update it. Hoping for some additional functionality.

The time depends on the read rate of the USB drive. Although the car cannot use the USB3 protocol a good quality USB3 drive will always be fastest as the limiting factor is not the bus speed but the read speed.

It normally takes around 35 to 40 minutes for an update to Sync and about 2.5 hours for the maps. Much better to do it on a drive rather than sitting with the engine running.

You update has probably completed but did it do a power cycle at the end by itself ? If not it will not have generated the xml file to upload to Ford. You can download the xml generation update (takes a matter of moments) from the Ford website.

I did it a couple of weeks back....it took ages and was loads of hassle. I too gave up but left the USB drive in the slot in the car. The next day, as I was driving home from work, it finished the update by itself.
I can't see what difference it made to be honest, apart from raising my blood pressure and the neighbours learning a few more swear words

Sync3 is end of life so it is just bug fixes now

I've just checked this morning and it looks like it did update?? I'm now running 3.0.20204.

I did try plugging my USB drive back in to see if it would copy over the file so I can upload to Ford, but it stated that it was updating the system again. I just removed the USB drive.

How important is it that I update Fords records? Would this stop me from getting the latest NAV package?

The updating system message is what it displays when generating the log file. You must leave the USB drive in until you are told to remove it. If you don't it will just keep restarting or fail. Sometimes it needs a key cycle or a reboot with the USB drive still in

There's some great info here, thanks everyone. I've just gone back the Ford website and checked and it now reads that my sync is up to date, so it must have connected over Wifi and updated. Sneaky.

I now have a 22.9GB map download. I'll have to think carefully about when I want to tackle this install :cautious:

I up-dated mine by a Memory Stick and after it has finished, it always requires WIFI for for some unspecified reason. Who leaves their vehicle with the engine running on the driveway for hours. This is totally useless and It does not say what features are missing. The Sat Nav still works. It all needs to be done by Memory Stick from the Ford Pas app on a PC, or it is totally useless and impractical. If the vehicle is left running on the drive way, by the time it has updated it will be in a crate on the way to the Far East: especially when only useless E.V.s are on the market. Someone needs to live in the real world!

I’m trying to update my sync 3 via usb but the ford pass app says it’s fully up to date with version 3.28 or whatever. The actually sync 3 system shows version 2.2 installed. I have no idea how I can update this now. I wanted to update to allow Apple car play and to update the maps that are out of date but again ford pas says they are up to date. Any help appreciated, I have a usb stick ready to go but just need the files to put on it
