I have recently completed a full upgrade from Sync 1 to Sync 2. It was much more work than I ever first imagined but it is 100% worth it.

For anyone considering doing this, you need to be confident with wiring, ideally soldering but you could use connectors. There are a number of the pins that are in a different place on the Sync 2 54 pin connector to where they are on Sync 1 54 pin connector, plus the Sync 1 module is in a different place, it’s above the glovebox. On Sync 2 it’s mounted on the back of the touchscreen. There is a conversion cable on Amazon (pictured) that I used but even that wasn’t long enough and I had to extend it. However, It did make the pin swaps a lot easier because I didn’t have to remove the pins from the plugs which is the trickiest bit. I cut the wires, extended them and did the pin swaps at the same time.

There is a lot of work involved and it really pays to do your homework before starting, there's a lot of info on the various forums about doing the upgrade. A lot have done this in a Focus but it's very similar in the Kuga. One thing to get your head around is the names of everything. When you read up about it you’ll hear references to APIM (touchscreen), FCDIM (your small screen), ACM (CD player/radio unit) & FCIM (Fascia button panel). You will also need to have the right media hub, it has to have an SD card slot so you can add the map card (if you upgrade to Sync 3 you won’t need the SD card slot as the maps are stored on the unit).

It is possible to use the cd player/radio unit from Sync 1 and a lot that I have seen for sale come with it, mine did. At first I stuck with the original one from my car but I had problems with the Bluetooth so I ended up swapping to the unit that came in the package I bought. You can get it to work with the unit from the Sync 1 but it will need more programming to work fully in conjunction with the Sync 2.

There are a number of parts that you will need to source which are different between the 2 systems. The cd player/radio unit needs to be lifted up and repositioned above the screen so you need a bracket for this, I found them hard to come by and had to buy one direct from Ford. The top dash cover is different, it’s longer and has a slot in it for the cd player, again not easy to get hold of the complete unit. Mine came without the mesh and the small front part but I did manage to get hold of both bits eventually.

Another thing to be aware of is that there’s a considerable amount of reconstruction to the inner dash and what I mean by this is with a saw! All the original mountings for the cd player need to be removed to allow the touchscreen and new fascia to fit. It is quite a task and not for the faint hearted. It also means that you can't go back to Sync 1 without changing the dashboard.

Once the unit is in and in, you need to do some programming with both Foccus and Forscan software, I had to play around with a few settings to get the parking display to work.

Anyway, if anyone is considering this you need to ask yourself, ARE YOU INSANE!!!

If anyone has any questions, I'd be happy to answer them.

Did you manage to 3d print a bracket to mount the screen or have you come up with something else.

Excellent video.

For someone who has done this upgrade you made that look quite easy and quick. In my experience it was, let's say an experience. There were some things we in the UK we didn't have access to, a conversion harness from sync 1 to sync 2 or 3. We made our own so connecting to the small sync 1 display 12 pin connector wasnt plug and play and the 8 pin plug to the radio bezel is missing a wire which we had to run in to make the panel work. Same with the cd cover illumination. Then of course the time to make the conversion lead. I found the right connectors on Ali Express after I did my upgrade.

Some differences on the UK car.

Our APIM is above the glovebox. The glovebox has to come out.
Our centre console is different. You only need to remove the bezel around the gear lever, remove the two screws and the centre part of the centre console just lifts up. Some have a screw at the back, mine didnt. No having to remove the climate panel and vents.

How many attempts at making the brackets to mount the screen did you have. It cost me a morning and I was worried about the screen not being secured at the top so we had engineering overload in the end. A 3D printed conversion bracket to mount the screen like the Focus has would be a massive time saver.

I assume you sell this as an install with sync 3 programmed to the car. We had to work out our own settings with the help of livinitup's sync 3 sheets which was a massive help.

Did you have any incompatibility with voice control. Something I never used but I found when I put sync 3 in, when I press the function button for voice command it turns the volume down most times. Occasionally it does work as it should. Could be an issue with the steering wheel control or I may have a wrong setting.

I did my sync 2 conversion in 2020 and then converted to sync 3 a few years later and so glad I did the upgrade and had the benefit of getting rid of that awful sync 1 system.

I made my own 4" to 8" sync 3 conversion harness. Got parts from Few sites like Mouser, TE, & Digikey. We will have the harness replicated and for sale at some point if anyone is wondering.

For the brackets, look a minute to see what we had to make a quick easy to replicate bracket. We used some aluminum Ls and it worked out nicely. I wanted to make a 3D printed bracket but didn't get the interest I wanted and needed to devote the time on the 3D part.

Yes, we will have a genie programmer that will handle any programming changes needed to anything that isn't the APIM. We will program the APIM accordingly before shipment. Livingitup is great. He has help us in the past.

No issues with the steering wheel controls. Got them working and voice commands are coming throw without issue.

You did a great job figuring it all out! Its no easy task. I made this kit using Ford's service info. Pouring over technical documents to reroute that is needed and add what was missing.

What's wrong, sounds like you have something not wired correctly.

Could you describe your problem?

I did the same @MaoVi . I checked all my pin swaps before I fitted to the car with a continuity tester.

Matt - does your voice control button work. On mine when you press it I get volume down. When I press volume down, I get volume down. If I press volume up there's nothing. Was wondering if I have a setting wrong or the steering wheel control itself is faulty.

Yes my voice control is working, and I haven't got any problem with it since fitted new screen. Possibly you have problem wirh wiring, maybe:
Pin 46 & 47 (Steering wheel control) from FCDIM Pin 7 & 10
Did you have this feature working on sync2 or sync1, if not maybe you have to change programming?
