I have recently completed a full upgrade from Sync 1 to Sync 2. It was much more work than I ever first imagined but it is 100% worth it.

For anyone considering doing this, you need to be confident with wiring, ideally soldering but you could use connectors. There are a number of the pins that are in a different place on the Sync 2 54 pin connector to where they are on Sync 1 54 pin connector, plus the Sync 1 module is in a different place, it’s above the glovebox. On Sync 2 it’s mounted on the back of the touchscreen. There is a conversion cable on Amazon (pictured) that I used but even that wasn’t long enough and I had to extend it. However, It did make the pin swaps a lot easier because I didn’t have to remove the pins from the plugs which is the trickiest bit. I cut the wires, extended them and did the pin swaps at the same time.

There is a lot of work involved and it really pays to do your homework before starting, there's a lot of info on the various forums about doing the upgrade. A lot have done this in a Focus but it's very similar in the Kuga. One thing to get your head around is the names of everything. When you read up about it you’ll hear references to APIM (touchscreen), FCDIM (your small screen), ACM (CD player/radio unit) & FCIM (Fascia button panel). You will also need to have the right media hub, it has to have an SD card slot so you can add the map card (if you upgrade to Sync 3 you won’t need the SD card slot as the maps are stored on the unit).

It is possible to use the cd player/radio unit from Sync 1 and a lot that I have seen for sale come with it, mine did. At first I stuck with the original one from my car but I had problems with the Bluetooth so I ended up swapping to the unit that came in the package I bought. You can get it to work with the unit from the Sync 1 but it will need more programming to work fully in conjunction with the Sync 2.

There are a number of parts that you will need to source which are different between the 2 systems. The cd player/radio unit needs to be lifted up and repositioned above the screen so you need a bracket for this, I found them hard to come by and had to buy one direct from Ford. The top dash cover is different, it’s longer and has a slot in it for the cd player, again not easy to get hold of the complete unit. Mine came without the mesh and the small front part but I did manage to get hold of both bits eventually.

Another thing to be aware of is that there’s a considerable amount of reconstruction to the inner dash and what I mean by this is with a saw! All the original mountings for the cd player need to be removed to allow the touchscreen and new fascia to fit. It is quite a task and not for the faint hearted. It also means that you can't go back to Sync 1 without changing the dashboard.

Once the unit is in and in, you need to do some programming with both Foccus and Forscan software, I had to play around with a few settings to get the parking display to work.

Anyway, if anyone is considering this you need to ask yourself, ARE YOU INSANE!!!

If anyone has any questions, I'd be happy to answer them.

The Ford Cmax here in the UK has exactly the same dashboard as the Kuga / Escape.

The pin out for your cars should be exactly the same as ours but some sync settings may be different. Here in the UK the Focus and Cmax have a different ACM to the Kuga. The Focus Cmax ACM isn't programmable.

I would still advise you buy a sync 3 screen. It's so much better than a sync 2 system. I put sync 2 in but then changed to sync 3.

@Drakey

First of all,,welcome to the forum

can you pop your Kuga/escape details into your signature,,so other members know what vehicle you want advice on,,thank you 👍

I found it best to draw out the pin layout. Start with the APIM then you match up to the other connectors for the correct signals. The pin outs are listed in this forum, I've since read through the pages and checked it against my work. Lining up nicely. I plan on making this upgrade into a kit to have on infotainment.com as I work there. What I need to release it faster is for more people to fill out our product interest form for the 4 to 8 escape project. Been my pet project for that last 3 months. Got all the info ready to release but I need more people signed up for the upgrade to release it.

Yes, That is the ultimate goal. I want to 3D print a bracket for the Screen/APIM that will also have spots for the top dash's retainer clips to snap into. I just need more people that are interested to fill out our product interest form for the Escape 4 to 8 project. More people signed up the more time I'll get to use the 3D scanner & printer. You can find the product interest at the top right of our site. "Product Request" Just look for Escape and you'll see the project come up.

Yank here. Found a listing on a website (that feels chinese, but not aliexpress) for the following image as a kit. Is the circled bracket the thing we're cutting our dashes to emulate? Could the dash and bracket be separated somehow to support something like this?

Good find. Trying to get the sync screen to fit properly without any gaps is the worst thing to do on the sync upgrade in my opinion. One of our members replaced his full dashboard ! I have had a theory for a while that more of the plastic could be removed and then an adapter plate can be used to mount the sync screen to. That could be what is shown in the picture.

Have you got a link.

I've got my chinese wiring harness and plugged it all in just to test. Everything functions perfectly, but when playing music (radio or bluetooth) there is a slight bit of static sound.

I doubt it's the wiring. I haven't told the car though forscan that it's a sync 2 now. Could that be the issue? Or bad ACM possibly?

#1,610 ·
Try it with the old sync 1 ACM. You really need to make the programming changes first. We used the FoCCCus program rev0.6 to make the changes with ours.

Sync 1 ACM works with sync 2 but you have to make one setting change on ACM for Bluetooth to work.

You need to OBDII to USB dongle and use Forscan to program the APIM and ACM to work correctly in the vehicle. This isn't to hard to do. There are many sources to teach you how to use Forscan, its very simple to use but the hard part is knowing what to change. That's where you gotta research. Or the easy way is to find a 2015 Ford Escape SE hybrid for sale with the same features as your Escape but came with 8.4" system from factory. Take that VIN and go to Ford's asbuilt data section, put in the VIN of the vehicle you found then copy that asbuilt data down. Use Forscan to change the asbuilt data on the installed ACM and APIM to the asbuilt data from the VIN you found.

FoCCCus download here. You want version 0.8.6

BCM Changes to make are as follows.

123 – Audio Aux Input change the value to 01 (without)
125 – DAB Radio System change the value to 01 (without)
154 – Module USB change the value to 01 (without)
157 – Bluetooth Handsfree change the value to 01 (without)
172 – Front Display change the value to 09 (DM8 with nav)
214 – ICP change the value to 09

Check this on your APIM to get park pilot on screen if you have rear sensors.

7D0-02-02 xxxx-*xxx-xxxx - Change this to a 2.

Wow, this thread is packed full of information :)

The wife has just purchased a 2014 Kuga and she's not too impressed with no android auto, maps, etc.

I'm undecided of either upgrading her sync 1 to sync 3, or getting one of the tesla screens from china.

Does anyone know of a more condensed guide on the sync 3 upgrade, rather than picking pieces from this mammoth thread :p I'm leaning more towards the sync 3 upgrade as it is more of a factory look.

Is there a list of parts required anywhere, from what I can gather I need

Sync 3 sat nav screen with apim
USB hub
Top cover (anyone know the part number?)
Screen bezel with controls
Wiring loom
Mounting hardware

I'm a little overwhelmed and any help would be most appreciated.

Cheers

I did start to do a walkthrough at one point but didn't want to steal Andrews thunder who started this thread. Without him and balders I would have not either started or have been avle to complete my upgrade. I don't think anyone expected it to grow to 80+ pages.

Everything required to do the upgrade is in this thread but appreciate trying to find the info is difficult. I can put you a list of parts together and give links to certain things. Some parts you have to sort yourself like how you are going to mount the screen. There is just a big open space. I spent a good few hours making some brackets.

The wiring loom I made myself using a camera adapter lead. If I was to do it now knowing what I know, I would buy one of the cheaper Chinese leads but every wire would need checking as they are not know to be 100% plug and play. Last time I looked there was one for the Escape at around ÂŁ40 or so which is worth buying.

Thanks for the reply :D. I've started ordering the bits and pieces, including a loom from china This one

I would like to buzz it out once it arrives, I've seen mention of the corrections that need to be applied, but never seen a link to it, all seems to have been via PM rather than posted directly.

Another question that has just sprung to mind, with the sync 3 bits having no SD card, how are the maps updated, are the updates purchased or is it an automatic update via a menu option.

Cheers.

That kit appears to be missing the usb lead. You can use any micro usb lead but I bought the proper one from Ali express.

Sync 3 maps are not available from Fords website for those of us who have retro fitted sync 3 as it's VIN entitlement only. If you have the VIN from the donor car you can update but there's another method in which newer maps can be installed and it's much more efficient than going the ford route. We can't post the info on here but if you Google sync 3 updater it should be the first hit. I will send you some info later but it's the last thing you will. Just make sure you buy a sync 3 unit complete and with nav as some sellers are splitting the touch screen from the APIM. Don't buy an ACM (cd player) from a focus or Xmas as there are not compatible. Cmax has same dashboard as the Kuga.

It means connecting your car to a laptop using a Vgate Vlinker FS usb and a programme called Forscan and changing some of the configuration settings.

I know this is an old post but was thinking of adding a kenwood double dinn to my kuga which currently has Sync 1 Sony system. I know there is the upgrade facia you can get but I think I'd like to put it into the sync 2 housing. Would a double dinn fit and would the sink 2 facia fit in the dashboard to replace what has been removed??

#1,641 ·
A traditional double din stereo would not fit into the sync 1 dash without cutting, but the sync 2 fascia might fit over the sync 1 dash to replace what's been removed. So, if you got a stereo thin enough, perhaps one of those "brain box + monitor" designs, you could make a mount for the screen to sit behind a sync 2 fascia without cutting your dash.
