The Mk3 Kuga will send and download data to/from FMC servers including sync updates and maps If your vehicle is connected to a Wi-Fi. On the FMC sync/maps page it should give an option to update via USB or WI-FI

I assume yours is a Mk3
Well that expalins that then. Yes, it is indeed a Mk3.

After a successful installation there should be a confirmation file added to your usb. From memory I think it contains your VIN and ends with a .xml file extension.

if it’s not there then you need to create one using the below Ford file maker :-

Having trouble getting a log file generated for your SYNC 3 update? Please follow below steps:
  1. Download this package (ZIP 47KB) and extract it on a USB stick (the USB stick needs to in ex-fat format)
  2. Enter your vehicle and switch on the engine
  3. When Sync 3 is fully loaded, insert the USB stick
  4. Wait until an “installation complete” message appears (it may take approximately 1 minute). This should now have produced a new log file
  5. Return to your PC and complete your update by uploading the log file onto the Ford website
  6. Here’s how to upload the log file using your PC:

    (a) Connect your USB Flash Drive to your PC and revisit the ‘Ford SYNC & Maps software update’ website (https://www. ford.co.uk/owner/resources-and-support/ sync-bluetooth/update#/).

    (b) Click the button “Confirm your update” and follow the instructions to upload the log file from your USB Flash Drive.

The file should look similar to this (Sync_WUB3A18V_WF05MNGCC5FY12345.xml).

    (c) A successful UPLOAD confirmation message should be displayed on your PC.
Hi there, I updated my maps on my 68 plate Kuga last week but can't log this with the Ford map update site. All the files appear to be on the USB Stick including the confirmation file but this file it has no file extension at all. Of course when going back to the Ford Update site it does't recognise it and tells me to check for map updates again. I tried the suggestion above, the SYNC screen tells me that the maps are upto date but when I plug in mu USB stick I get a repeat of the above? Any other ideas out there as it is beginning to get on my nerves! Oh, I also tries manually adding the file extension to the log file but no joy.

Really useful, thank you! I'm curious where did you find the URL to the log file creation tool? It turned me nuts!

Thank you, GhostWalker - yes, it's the same link contributed, then re-posted by @The Painter more recently; I felt just cuious about where (the ****) in Ford's site they found it!
I have printed a compressed step by step guide to updating the maps, which I plan to carry along during my next upcoming 2-hour+ journey. I will share details on the experience here.
By the way, I downloaded-decompressed-USB'd the map update package yesterday and it lacked file "DONTINDX.MSA" as described by Ford. No references to this ocurrence in their troubleshooting hints at the end of their guide!
After discovering @The Painter 's post, though, I proceeded to download the log file creation tool package -just in case- and found that this one (basically a subset of the larger map update package) did include the "DONTINDX.MSA" file. I noticed this file's size is 0 (zero) Kb so I guess it's just used as a 'flag' by the update process altogether (I double-checked for no content with a hex editor anyway), so I placed a copy of this file at the recently produced map update USB in order to complete the package as repeatedly suggested by Ford. Let's see what this transpires finally!
Please don't take the above as a solution to anything for now, as I haven't effectively carried out the update process yet (awaiting to my next upcoming 2-hour drive, wich might take weeks to occur!)
Rgds.

I’ve given up with sync updates, but just checked the site and found that my vehicle is eligible for a 7.9gb Map update, normally they are 20GB+ Mmmmmm.

I think they're (hopefully) wrong about the actual package's size. Mine has taken only 8 GBs from my freshly made "32" GB USB

Hi, I tried Sync 3 updates section, but found this thread which seem to have the experts on. I tried WiFi updates, but that told me I had the latest version, so I had to use the USB method which told me I needed to update Sync first. I downloaded software and successfully updated the Sync. It appeared to create the correct xml file on stick. When I tried to upload it I got this message. When i look on PC or iPad it still displays this so it must be a Ford cookie that’s triggering it.
im stuck and can’t get past this stage, I have been waiting a week for Ford to review the file.
Any help, ideas greatly appreciated.

Hi Charlie, what's your current versions of Sync and Maps?
Thank you for replying, when I first accessed the update site it prompted me to update my sync software, see below.
sync and map versions are screenshots from car screen. Note it says all software is up to date. Do you know what latest of map is?

Sorry no images attached to your post... (or maybe it's me?)

Thank you! My current sync 3 version is 3.4.23188 so you need to update. My maps are F12 as read on my car's screen, however Ford insists (since months ago) that there is a new version. I have always used the WiFi method (veery slow indeed).

When I try WiFi method it checks for updates and says I have the latest version.
