To upgrade from sync 1 or sync 2 to sync 3 I doubt if the dealers will be able to help due to their lack of knowledge regarding upgrades and they would only swap the APIM of the same series, i.e. sync 1 for sync 1, sync 2 for sync 2 etc.

In order to properly upgrade from sync 1 to either sync 2 or 3 then you need an as built data file from the same model of car which you are upgrading to. So if you have a 15 plate car on sync 1 and want to put a sync 3 screen in from a 17 plate car you need an as built data file for the same model car that was manufactured in 2017 and is running sync 3.

I haven't done this yet but have done all the theory on upgrading from sync 1 to sync 2. To go from sync 1 to 3 is the same procedure requiring an as built file.

I thought this had already been said in this thread but apologies if it hasn't.

@balders and @andspenka have both upgraded from sync 1 to sync 2 and then from sync 2 to sync 3.

bakders has explained why you need the as built file

As Martin says and is correct... 😉😉..... I went from Sync1 to Sync 2 on my previous Kuga (65 plt Titanium X .... The unit will boot up, but you may need some asbuilt codes from a Sync 2 car for Park sensors etc to work. I upgraded from Sync 2 to 3 on my Tit X Sport with no coding.... All the asbuilt /coding was done with Forscan and an EML 327 reader. As i say you won't know what will work and what won't until its up and running. The only other thing you will need is a vin number from a car fitted with Sync 2/3 for software /map updates.....no need for Ford to get involved.... 😉😉

I like sync3, ok it doesn’t always do what I want it to do, but that sounds like a mighty lot of messing about. I used to be a “tinkerer” thinking what I was doing, was for the better. When in fact it always set me back which then required a more specialised touch. Mind, those were the days when there was no scanny things and obi-1-canobi ports to plug into.

Good look.

I just read that.....OBD 1 canobie.

He's a bit behind the time though as we are on OBD2 now. Wouldn't it be nice if all the manufacturers had the same software instead of each doing their own.

My post was a play on “Star Wars”, Obi-wan-kenobi, I knew what I was saying, but others lack the “force” to see where I was going with it. Either that or I’ve lost the plot.

OBD2 you say......

Sorry, I haven't been on here much lately.

@balders

I never changed anything in my as built when I changed from 2 to 3, only thing I did was update the firmware to see if it fixed the USB bug but it never. BTW there's a new version out, 20184 it's not on the downloader yet though.

So, we've done most of the conversion with a donor kit from a 2019 car. The seller kindly provided us with the donor cars GPS antenna with what looked like the original loom lead, but the plug on the end didn't suit the APIM for some reason, it's the 'socket' rather than the 'plug', so it's as though there's a bit missing. We had already bought an aftermarket GPS antenna, so just went with that.

We didn't take into account the plug changes for the Media Hub, so are unable to get that working today unfortunately. Annoying. I guess we'll order one of the £15ish plug 'n' play adapters from Amazon. Ours is Sync 2a for reference.

The Media Hub needs a trim adapter to fit. Anyone have the FINIS code for that?

The unit itself has of course read the cars VIN from the ECU and that's all fine. The rear sensors appeared from the off, but we don't have any display in connection with the Climate Control. Does that need to be activated using FORScan?

Climateneeds to be activated as it is not a standard option on UKSync3 vehicles.

As Nigel says... Climate will need activating with Forscan.... But it will be reversed. The adapter for the media hub, I gave up and just slotted mine into the gap left by the Sync 2 hub.

I have to admit, that did look too wide from the picture, so my guess is that's it.

Is Sync 3.3 the latest version that we can get?

I'm trying to find a loom adapter to go from the Sync 2a plug for the USB Media port to the Sync 3 one, like this one but ideally in the UK...

Ford do one apparently, but check out the price... Makes me think that Ford must offer the conversion, even though some have tried unsuccessfully. What else would that adapter be for?
