Well towed for the first time with my Kuga today, although have towed with other vehicles before. This was mine and the passenger’s maiden voyage with me at the wheel

Hitched up behind was an Equi-Trek Trail Treka ‘M’ which has a gross weight of 2000kg.

On board in the trailer, was my partners and her friends horse with them both and another passenger with me at the wheel in the Kuga.

What can I say?? Owned this vehicle since late October 2010 and it still never ceases to amaze me. Pulled VERY well, reversed wonderful (despite reduced visibility with privacy glass) not a single bad comment from the passengers.

Just wish they both had done better in their dressage tests, oh well I enjoyed the drive! Cool

That's good news!

In reply to your question, you only need AWD when on very wet or soft grass or snow, then it makes ALL the difference!

Not had our Kuga a week yet, but our Panda 4x4 was the ONLY car to get up our road in the last big fall of snow until lunctime - it even pulled a stuck fully laden Golf estate up the road, NO 2wd would have done that!

Hi Gwilliams,

Whilst under most circumstances the Kuga does not use its four wheel capability, I for one opted for the 4X4 version for those occasions when a 2 wheel drive would struggle to cope. Whilst this year has not seen a harsh winter up here in the North East of Scotland, I would not bet on this being the norm. The added security provided by 4X4 drive in ice and snow makes it worth it.

   Cheers, bayman

I needed AWD on a field once with my caravan. I was at the bottom of a very wet and soggy steep hill campsite. After pushing a Volvo with a caravan attached off the site it was my turn, It didn't flinch, straight off we came, no bother.

I wouldn't want to tow a 2000kg horse box without AWD. After all, by the very nature of the sport, a horse box is bound to end up on a wet or muddy field at some point in time, then you'd appreciate the AWD.

I tow a caravan and bought the AWD version specifically for that.

Good luck!

I wouldnt want to tow a horse box thats 2000KG plus horses, as that would be over the braked limit of the car.  Have an accident towing that weight in a Kuga, and your insurance will tell you to take a hike. Shocked

Oh, sorry, not seen a single bit of grass since my first post. EVERY weekend I tow the horse box to various different events and all the parking is done on hard standing or tarmac car parks. So by the very nature of this sport this horse box won’t need a Kuga with AWD or the extra road tax associated to it.

I have also towed caravans in the past with and without 4 wheel drive and not had problems.

Good luck not needed thanks just sensible driving and forward planning and GOOD vision of where I park

Thanks Wink

That’s not correct, as this trailer has an unladen weight of 890kg and a gross weight (includes horses and equipment) of 2000kg so I’m well below carrying 2 medium size horses

Forgive me, I thought the weight of the trailer was 2000kg before the horses - which I must admit struck me as being one hell of a trailer. LOL
