Yes I've got exactly the same as you and mine went on last month after reading that we could get snow at the end of October   ... At least I'm prepared however, after spending all that money you can gurantee we won't see any snow. In some ways I'd be pleased but in others I'd like to see how it does, after all not being stuck in bad weather was the reason I bought my kuga. That said I wouldnt swap him for anything now (well you know what I mean).

A friend of mine who owns a front wheel drive car has had two Nankang NK SNOW SV-2 Tyres fitted to the front wheels by the dealer who sold her the car,
Is this correct or should they be fitted to the rear wheels,?
Also if you have Snow Tyres fitted should you have them fitted to all four wheels.?
Thanks for any advice,
BobConfused

Snow tyres on the front on an FWD motor will give you better traction for pulling away, and perhaps even for cornering. But slowing down might be fun as there will be limited grip on the rear.

There is probably a VERY good argument to fit Snow tyres all-round, even on a 2WD vehicle - for the increased stability when trying to slow down on snow and ice (something that many drivers forget - ESPECIALLY those of us with AWD motors, i.e. it is not just a case of getting your motor to move off in the snow, it is FAR more important to be able to stop safely once you have got moving!!).

Unfortunately, tyre dealers and manufacturers will not be the least biased folk if it comes down to helping you to decide whether two or four new tyres are the best option !!

Cheers,
Niall

Hi Elder,
I will echo Niall, all four is the correct option. If only two are fitted on the front driving wheels then do not get over ambitious, and continue to drive as if the vehicle is running on summer tyres. The benefit will be in extra traction but NOT brakeing as the rears will not have the same amount of grip and may well let go, resulting in a spin. DeadErmm

Murgy, there is a lot more to it than just the tread.  The composition of the rubber is very different from summer to winter tyres.  Arguably the summer tyres do in fact 'give up' in the winter to some extent because they are much less pliable and so do act differently in cold weather.

You have made your choice and others have made a different choice but your choice does go against most of the published research and advice.

Last year up here the only people who got around with seemingly little problem were those who switched to winter tyres.  I have decided to take no chances this year and have switched to steel wheels and winter tyres.  I am now looking forward to what the winter throws up as I want to see how my Kuga copes.
   Cheers, bayman

Hi bayman,
Are these the same steel wheels as yours, if so did you have to use different wheel nuts, as I've been told you do but am unable to find any information on them

Hi Elder,

I got a set of 16" steel wheels from wheelsandthings fitted with jinyu winter tyres which my mechanic assured me would be fine for the winter. I have used my alloy wheel nuts which look a bit peculiar but are doing the job. I have been advised to tighten them every couple of weeks.

 Hope this helps, bayman
