Anyone else got the problem, that the leather cover around the gear stick has started to split, and a hole appear? (Apologies for my terminology, but not mechanically minded) Will this be covered by the warranty?

My leather gator also holed around the gearstick and was replaced under warranty no questions asked. My Kuga had done approx 10,000 miles at the time so any damage of this sort is not really normal wear and tear.

Mines gone too. Luckily trim is covered by the Ford warrenty for the first year. If I had of left it any longer the dealer said I would have had to pay.

Mine also starting to split at 15k just out of 12mth trim warranty but not too bothered as I dont really want ford dealer doing anything thats not urgent cos they tend to do more damage, particularily on interior trim.

Mine is OK, but it looks like vinyl to me, so it might last better if it was really leather!

Our Kuga only has 7000 miles, bought second hand and wife has noticed a hole in the leather gear surround. Only had the car one month. It's over a year old though so will be interesting when we speak to the dealer we bought it from if they will replace it. I would hope so as it's so few miles and can't be considered normal wear and tear, well i hope!

I know this has been a problem for other owners - not something I would expect on a 16 month old car.
On taking my Kuga to the dealer today for an automatic wiper problem to be fixed, I also asked them to replace the gear gaiter which has cracked in three places, only to be told that trim is not covered after the first 12 months.
Has anyone managed to get a failed gear gaiter replaced after 12 months, or have you had to pay for a new one?

seems to be a lot of the 'not after 12 months' type reports..

rubbish really...as surely the design life on the vehicle should be...what..10 years?

i has scratch marks appear on the leather gearnob on my Lexus after about 2 years...in releality it was likely to be caused by the previous owners ring in his fingers...however they swapped the whole lot..no quibble...also replaced the alloys at the same time (slight bubling)

sounds like ford need to up their customer service!

We have been just told the same thing. The gaitor on my wife's kuga has a hole in it. The car is only 14 months old with 7500 miles on the clock but we only bought it a month ago secondhand so we have no idea if it was already broken before we go it or not.
It's not wear and tear at 7500 miles. She is going to speak to Ford and ask them to help out, Probably speak to the sales guy who we bought it from and see if we can twist his arm to replace it FOC.

Told it's £50 + vat for a new one but do i really want to be spending out that amount every year to replace a broken gaitor, maybe a bit extreme as i'm sure they've strengthened it to stop this happening.

The gaitor actually popped off on ours during a drive to France, it took a few attempts to get it to sit back properly.

As far as I am concerned, Ford's 12 month warranty on internal trim is not acceptable, and I would advise anyone else to escalate the matter. Do not reply on the dealer to do it on your behalf, call Ford Customer services.

Just looking at both Kia's 7 yr and Hyundia's 5yr warranties, on the surface at least Kia's 7yr warranty appears to be quite good, Hyundia's however seems to put a lot of emphasis on it's exclusion section and I suspect although boasting a 5ys warranty it's probably just like Ford's 3yr warranty which is also quite limiting with the usual notable exclusions.  At least Kia although not 100% transparent does attempt to define some salient sections of their warranty,  Paint: 5yrs.  Audio: 3yrs. Battery: 2 yrs. Items such as wipers, brake/clutch linings are excluded but does not specifically mention bulbs, interior/exterior trim, lighting units, wheels, etc etc. Perhaps it's something you and your lawer should discuss with the salesman prior to making a purchase, LOL my opinion is that all car warranties appear to be (for obvious reasons) just a little lacking in fine detail.

Been onto Ford this morning and explained the gear gaiter problem and the fact that hundreds (if not thousands) are encountering the problem.  To be fair the guy at customer services took all my car details, issued me with a reference number and told me to take the car to my dealership and have them submit a diagnostics report back to Ford explaining the issue!

So phoned the dealer and explained the above phone call with Ford and he reckons there is a 99% chance they will replace it AFTER the year has expired like mine just has!

So I would say to people to get on the phone to Ford cos they are now aware of this problem!

Our car's got it's first service next Monday. Our gaiter is cracking and I showed it to guy when we booked it in. He says he'll order one for Monday and show it to their "warranty co-ordinator" then. He reckons there shouldn't be a problem (fingers crossed).
