Thanks Andy. I think I follow all that. Although I thought the KUGA was FWD unless needed, and as I was driving in good conditions and only for 20 or so miles I hope no damage was done. I will certainly raise the points you mention and see what they say.

Good News Andy as long as that was all it was, seek assurances on related parts!!What about a free first service as a goodwill gesture for your weekend from hell.

Well 24 hours after I was told my car should be ready and still not fixed, I called the dealer and he initially said "it was still being worked on" but when pushed admitted that the parts would not be with Ford until Friday at the earliest, and then would have to be shipped to the local dealership, and only then would they be able to fit it. I guess I am experiencing some of that famous Ford after care. I bought my car on the 2nd of Feb and with the delivery delays and repair delays I have spent less than 1 hour behind the wheel.

My son had a similar problem just before Christmas on his Citreon ZX. We took it to the local garage about 1.30pm but were told that the "part" was not in stock. We were promised that the part would be ordered and be with them within 24 hours. True to their word, the ordered part was dispatched from the South of England and arrived here at 11am. Car repaired and back on the road within a few hours.
Why can't Ford do the same with their "spare parts" !

ok..simple explanation..
As previously mentioned the prop shaft runs from the gearbox (under where the gearstick is!) to the middle of rear wheels (diff) it turns several times faster (in RPM) than the wheels do...therefore it needs to be perfectly straight and perfectly balenced to prevent vibrations occuring..i suspect the shaft would turn regardless of AWD being utilized (i think the cleaver bit is done at the diff end)
The likely cause assuming it was driving well before hand and you didnt dive over something which caused pysical damage to the prop would be the balencing weight(s) falling off! the balanecing procedure is a little like that of balencing a wheel which you will probably be more familiar with however the effects feel far worse as the RPM is greater
As you have only drive a short distance..and slowly, it wouldnt have done any long term damage...it feels far worse in the car than it actually is.
hope its fixed soon and back home!

Kuga Dave - I am dealing with polar ford. I must say that the sales and service managers have been very helpful and suitably chagrin. but I am frustrated with Ford - who it seems, doesn't have a single prop shaft in the country for a Kuga.
Sparkz - thanks for the explanation, makes it much clearer.
