Since reading the wiring issues on Ford (factory) fit towbars does anyone know if they have now resolved the issue of the wiring of pins 9 & 10. I am awaiting delivery of new Kuga with Ford removable tow bar and guess it would be good to know if they now wire it properly .Would also be interested what MTPLs owners tow as it has a huge legal towing capacity which exceeds the Caravan Club recommended 85 o/o rule

Woodman

I had a Ford (13pin) loom fitted with a Westfalia detachable ball. Had to go out and purchase a 7pin adaptor, and to be fair have yet to change over - only because I tow a Trailer only (not Caravan) so dont need the 12N & 12S Sockets, but must admit the fact the 13Pin Wiring Socket retracts back under the bodywork is great.

With regards Towing weights, I tow a 4 wheel Trailer with a Vintage Tractor on board with an all up weight of 2025kg. (Max is 2100kg) I tows a dream, however CofG is low unlike a Caravan, so can't speak of this situation. I will try an attach photo, but do struggle on this one

Happy Towing

Hi Woodman,
I think you will find that most main dealerships of any vehicle make will call on the services of a local towbar fitter to fit and wire your new 'Ford' towbar. Again the 'Ford' towbar is unlikely to be one made by Ford but a unit specific for the kuga made by one of the established towbar manufacturers.
The wiring has to be carried out to current specifications to operate the fridge on 12 volts, only when the engine is running.
Regarding the towing limits, there is as you note a vast difference between what the Kuga is designed to tow and what it is SAFE to tow under normal road condition.
The 2100kg towing ability of the Kuga is not the same as 85% of the fully laden weight. I cannot remember exactly what the figue is without searching for it, but I tow 1495kg which is about 94% and it handles very well. You do not mention what experience of towing you have, but if you are not towing for the first time then you should be well able to cope with a 85-95% weight ratio.

Welcome and happy towing. Thumbs Up

Hi again,
Woodman at 1480 kg you will be O.K and safe.

Tuggie,
We are not comparing like with like here. A close coupled trailor of the type you are using behaves very differently to a centrally pivoted caravan, and it is a lot more stable.

Win Doc
Yes I totally agree, and that's why I mentioned the 4 wheeled trailer, and low Centre of Gravity. I did tow 'vans for many years, and very concious of the differences, but did want to advise the Kuga will tow the weight comfortably. With a 'van I would never exceed the 85% Caravan Club Rule. This would give the Kuga a towing capacity of 1785kg, and Woodman is only towing 1480kg, so should tow a dream if the 'van is loaded correctly.

Good to have the debate though.
Cheers

The factory fit bar isnt Westfalia, i think its made by Bosal for Ford.
I prefer the Westfalia as the bumper cut is much less, and completely unseen from the rear, where as the Ford one is visible. Have a look through my pictures (See signiture below), I have had a Ford one on my first Kugas and now have a Westfalia.
If the Ford kit is fitted it comes with the stability thing, as the parts are "as fitted" at the factory, no dealer download is required on Kuga.
