Hi Folks,
I intend to fit a reversing camera and a 7" lcd screen to my Kuga this week I thought I had a foolproof plan of how to do it until I realised that I hadn't taken the split tailgate into account! The short version is.... I'm gonna try to pick up a feed from the reversing circuit at the rear wiper motor? As you will all know the rear wiper automatically switches on if reverse is selected when the front wipers are on. So if possible I'd like to see a Kuga wiring diagram to see if that circuit can be tapped into without the rear wiper having to be powered up to the extent that the wiper arm is moving? Many thanks in advance PS.... Does anyone know if adding additional items to the reverse circuit will give Canbus errors?

hi matey...
im pretty sure the brains of if the wiper comes on when you select reverse will be done by the ECU and simply give the feed to the motor if it your wipers are on and your going backwards.. id suggest the easiest way of doing it would be passing another wire thru the rubber tubes fed from the reversing lights (yeah..its gonna be hassle lowing the roof lining and poking a cable thru both rubbers) ...the cam pulls little current so its unlikely to give you any errors...in fact the main trigger for an error is too little draw on the cable (blown bulb) so i think an added 50mA or so of a cam wont phase it.....unless someone has experience of this, id probably lash it up quickly to check it all works before hard wiring. hope this helps!

Hi Sparkz,
Thanks for the reply and advice mate. My not so foolproof plan was/is to mount the screen on the plastic cover that goes over the rear wiper motor. The screen I've purchased comes with a similar bracket/mount to one you'd find on a camera tripod. So the fact that the motor cover is curved and slopes isn't going to be an issue. The idea was that I'd still have to look over my shoulder when reversing but the screen would be hidden from prying eyes by the same tinted windows that have prompted me to buy the camera So "IF" I can avoid your suggestion of running extra wiring in the cable tracts and keep the install simple and keep both the camera & screen on the same upper section of the tailgate it'll be a real result and hopefuly a very neat installation? If it weren't for the Kuga having a split tailgate my plan would work like a dream! Thanks again....... Regards Jez PS.... Plan B might be to wire it up so the screen/camera come on when I manualy turn the rear wiper on. Not ideal but the wiper won't obstruct the view from the camera and for how often I'll need the camera i.e. reversing at night. I reckon I could live with that Or plan C .... As the screen comes with a remote control. I'll give it a constant live and just use the remote to put it in and out of standby mode as and when required. That'll work fine but it isn't as flash as it coming on when reverse is selected

The live feed from the reversing lights and then to the screen would seem to be the most logical, assuming you have a constant live feed to the camera, but having never fitted a reversing camera I'll be very interested in how you get on.
[and by the way Dozers D , concerning the boxer, I used the picture where he looks sensible and not the normal type of the playful fool that he is! regards....] |

Hi The Rocket,
Your spot on mate except if the screen is mounted where I explained that I'm gonna mount it and the upper part of the tailgate is opened. I'll either have wires trailing down to the reverse lights that are on the lower part of the tailgate or as Sparkz suggested it will mean a whole load of hassle removing panels/roof lining to gain access the cable tracts and pulling wires through to the reverse lights in the lower section. The other problem with that is the additional wires won't be taped to the loom. So as they'll be flapping around they could become damaged/chaffed after a while? Regards Jez PS.... Your Boxer looked just fine to me matey |

Hi Dozers Dad,
I've recently installed a Towbar and the wiring instructions clearly showed you could pick up the reversing light feed on the left hand side of the boot (as you look in), behind the left hand panel at the multi-plug connector. The cable for this is green and black in colour, but I'd recommend downloading the Westfalia instructions for the Kuga from here: http://www.westfalia-automotive.de/index.php?id=6&L=1 and download the PDF. Have a look on page 7, instruction step 9 for the 13pin unit, which you scotch-lock onto with the green cable for Pin No.8 for the 13 pin socket, which is the reversing light feed to the trailer. Hope this is of some help, as an easy location to pick up the correct feed. KS. |

Hi Kuga spud,
Thanks mate but I need to have all the connections contained within the upper part of the tailgate. Otherwise I'll have wires trailing down to where your talking about. I nearly worked it out today? I've found the wires in question for the reverse circuit, fitted the camera and made most of the connections req'd. Todays stumbling block was the fact that the plack plastic trim that runs around the inside of the upper tailgate appears to be a honeycomb design so no chance of feeding wiring through without dismantling the glass hatch part of the tailgate! So I'm gonna be able to hide 85% of the wiring and 100% of the connectors but there might have to be a small amount of wiring surface mounted? Unless it was pointed out to you you'd never see it though. So although I'm a real OCD perfectionist I'm gonna have to decide to either bite the bullet and dismantle the whole tailgate or put up with a bit of surface wiring? Watch this space....... I "Might" be able to show you folks a photo of the finished job by this time 2moro but don't hold your breath!

Hi Folks,
The camera/screen are both fitted and working! I managed to set them up so they switch on & off automaticaly when reverse is selected aswell. It basically works in the exact same way as the one that Ford supply only for a total expenditure of approx £50. This includes a 7" LCD screen, colour camera with night vision, an M to M AV adaptor plus various fixings & lengths of wire from my new best friends at Maplin I've been intouch with Gazwats (Forum admin) re how to post the details of the install. So when I get a chance to take a few photos of the finished job and write a quick description of how I did it. I'll start a new thread in this section. I'm afraid it won't be full of step by step photos though because I was so busy scratching my balls re how to route the wires and connect them up & trying not to get soaking wet or freeze to death during the install, That the step by step photos slipped my mind "Sorry!" I might leave it a couple of days before starting the thread to ensure that all's well with the install?...... You know what they say about "Pride coming before a fall!" Regards Jez PS.... I suppose I "Could" pull the car to bits again and take photos? However I could also, learn to spell, Become a born again Christian, Quit smoking, Act my age occasionaly or try to ditch my warped sense of humour etc etc but please don't hold your breath whilst waiting for any of these things to happen anytime soon!
