Having recently changed to a Kuga, I’ve been looking into the cost of the 2 cross bars to attach to the roof rails already on the car. I’ve been quoted by 2 local Ford dealers £132.50 + VAT = £159.00 for the cross bars. This seems a bit steep to me.

It seems that Ford don’t manufacture their own kayak carrier and instead recommend a Thule kayak carrier 874. I’ve looked around the internet and prices for these seem to be around the £90 mark.

Does anyone use the Ford cross bars or can anyone recommend another brand?

Also does anyone use the Thule kayak carrier 874 or can anyone recommend another brand?

I plan to do some touring weekends once the weather warms up a bit and thought I’d get organised! For those kayakers out there, my boat’s a Venture Kayak Easky 15.

Thanks.

Andy

Hi Andy66,

If you look on ebay under Kuga accessories there are several dealers doing cross bars suitable for the Kuga. I haven't added any to mine so I cannot recommend any but £159 does seem a bit steep.

Cannot help you on the kayak front, there will probably be someone on here who can help.

I was looking at roof bars to carry my inflatable canoe and came across these aero bars on Ebay:

They arrived within 5 days and I'm mighty impressed with them. Although they are not Kuga specific and I had to trim a few centimetres off each bar with a hacksaw, they now fit perfectly and, IMHO, are extremely neat looking with no ugly end clamps.

Thanks to both win-doc and arkay for your replies - I'll look further into both suggestions.

Just an update - managed to get a pair of second hand Ford roof bars off ebay for £80 Smile. Also tracked down a Thule kayak carrier 874 from Dagenham Motors for £69, so very happy.

One question though; is anyone able to let me have a copy of the roof bar fitting instructions? I've got 2 sets of keys but can't work out how the feet lock so that the bars do not move. I've contacted the seller, but he lost the original instructions!

Thanks.

Keys are for locks in the end of the bars...they are numbered so easy to match. Unlock each lock and pull outwards to reveal thin shaft and turn anti clockwise on all 4 fittings . Position one side over rails on car and gently lower other side and move feet in and out until they locate on other bar. Centralise bars so has equal overhang and then turn locks clockwise equally to tension feet onto roof rails. When all stiff hand tight align locks with bar and push home. Lock with key....simples !

Woodman,

Many thanks for the instructions and the picture, very helpful. I've put the bars on that car and they look great!

Cheers.
